The journal Zentralblatt MATH was founded in 1931 as Zentralblatt fur Mathematik und ihre Grenzgebiete/Mathematics Abstracts. This journal publishes articles and books reviews in mathematics, mechanics and related fields in cooperation with the Corresponding Editorial Offices located in Eastern Europe countries, which provide articles and books reviews published mainly in these countries to Zentralblatt MATH. One of these Editorial Offices is located at Mechanics and Mathematics Faculty of Kiev National University of Ukraine. In our presentation we will give a description of the cooperation with Zentralblatt MATH and mention problems related with the process of preparing and submission of reviews.

Zentralblatt MATH — Overview
Zentralblatt für Mathematik und ihre Grenzgebiete was founded in 1931 by O. Neugebauer and is today the longest-term running abstracting and reviewing service in the field of mathematics. It covers the entire spectrum of pure mathematics (e.g. algebra, logic, topology, geometry, analysis), probability theory, statistics, mathematical physics, classical, solid and fluid mechanics, numerical mathematics, mathematical programming, theoretical computer science and automata theory, systems theory, control, operations research, economics, information and communication, circuits, coding, cryptography, applications in biology, chemistry, sociology, psychology. Citations are classified according to the worldwide accepted Mathematics Subject Classification (MSC http://www.zblmath.fiz-karlsruhe.de/MATH/text/msc/index). It contains references to the worldwide literature drawn from currently about 3000 journals and serials(http://www.zblmath.fiz-karlsruhe.de/MATH/text/serials/index), from conference proceedings, collections of papers and books. In the course of the European extension the service was recently renamed to Zentralblatt MATH, to shorten the lengthy German title. Zentralblatt MATH (http://www.zblmath.fiz-karlsruhe.de/MATH/text/about/zentralblatt) publishes about 60.000 abstracts and reviews per year produced by more than 5000 scientists; the reviews are mainly written in English, but some also in French and German. Published by Springer-Verlag, Zentralblatt MATH is edited by the European Mathematical Society (EMS http://www.emis.de/), Fachinformationszentrum (FIZ) Karlsruhe (http://www.fiz-karlsruhe.de/), and the Heidelberger Akademie der Wissenschaften (http://www.haw.baden-wuerttemberg.de/).
The name Zentralblatt MATH stands equally for the conventional printed service as well as for the three online offers. The central offer consists in the online database with WWW-access, further offers are made via the host system of STN International, and the CD-ROM version for off-line use. The total amount of documents for which information is stored in the databases is more than 1.800.000. The online database is updated once a month which corresponds to two volumes of the printed service of Zentralblatt MATH.
Searches are possible on a variety of fields: authors, titles, classification, basic index, source, language etc. A search can be formulated in logical combinations of these terms. The search can be made in a command mode or be guided by a graphical user interface. The information is available in the AMSTeX source code, but tools for a convenient formula display are available. Download of the hit list at the users site is possible, and links to the full text of the corresponding article will be arranged, if this is available electronically. An additional option is document delivery service by which customers can order full text versions of the articles in question. Buttons to connect to such services and to see, if the corresponding article is available there, are installed in the search menu. Document delivery can be arranged by these services electronically or by sending copies by ordinary mail at reasonable rates.
Improvements of the services are continued in several areas, the most important being:
Cooperation of Zentralblatt as a European activity.
The overall goal is to improve the facilities of the “European Database in Mathematics” with Zentralblatt MATH as its core, to transform Zentralblatt within this framework to a distributed European activity (see the LIMES — Project http://www.emis.de/Projects/LIMES), and to improve and widen the access to Zentralblatt for European countries by providing structures for a better distribution on the technical and on the economical level. Initial steps into the direction of the European extension have been initiated through a bilateral German-French co-operation (CNRS/Université Grenoble) on software development and support, distribution of the database in France, and by a series of co-operations between German and Middle/East-European academic institutions (Hungary, Czech Republic, Russia, Ukraine et al.). About 13 servers of various types currently exist. Broader and improved access to the database via national access nodes and new data distribution methods are currently under discussion. In particular, improvements of access are planned for isolated universities in regions under economic difficulties and in associated states of Central and Eastern Europe where a mathematical tradition of excellence is under economic threat. Stimulation of usage for all kinds of research as well as for funding organizations before decision making is achieved by initial trial accounts. Improved coverage and evaluation of European research literature is planned via nationally distributed editorial units, and the development of new technologies for efficient database production. These activities are supervised by a European advisory board (under the auspices of the EMS), in close coordination with other European information activities (like FIZ, VINITI, European publishers etc.).

Contents of Reviews
A review of a mathematical work should give a brief and clear account of its contents. Reviewing papers in applied mathematics should concentrate on the mathematical aspects. Reading the review is not intended to be a substitute for reading the original paper; the primary purpose is to help the user to decide whether a he needs to read the original. The reviewer has, in principle, no responsibility of checking the correctness or novelty of the original, but if he does discover that it contains a significant error or that it overlaps significantly with other work, he should mention the fact. References to related work are always appreciated.
Style and Format: Reviews should preferably be written in English. German or French will be accepted in exceptional cases. They should be expressed concisely and clearly and should conform to normal standards of usage in the language chosen. A reader with a moderate knowledge of the language in question should be able to understand the review. In case of a translated title of the original, please check its correctness.
Citations: References to journal articles should be given in the form: {\it author} [journal short title according to Zentralblatt MATH (See serials and journals database), volume number, issue number, pages (publication year; Zbl number)]. You may look up the Zbl reference for citations in our MATH Database. Example: {\it B. H. Gross} and {\it D. B. Zagier} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 335, 191-220 (1985; Zbl: 545.10015)]. References to books, reports, theses etc. should be given in the form: {\it author} [original title or English translation title (Language) (series, publisher, city), (publication year; Zbl number (or leave space))]. Example: {\it J. Tate} [Les conjectures de Stark sur le fonctions L dArtin en s=0 (Prog. Math. 47, Birkhäuser, Boston) (1984; Zbl 545.12009)]. For other references give as many details as possible.
Reviews of papers published in scientific journals must meet the following requirement:
1) the data of the document have been keyboarded in the input format used by Zentralblatt,
2) the abbreviation and transliteration standards of Zentralbatt have been applied,
3) the title has been translated into English if it has been given in another language,
4) classifications according to the current MSC (MSC 2000 at present) and some suitable English keywords have been added to the review,
5) the review has been edited as far as the formulas and quotations are concerned and the whole set of data has been proofread for the final version.
The texts should be written in AMSTEX.
