BRIEF HISTORY, MAIN FUNCTIONS

Founded in 1930 with only 3 thousand volumes of books and 6 people on the staff, Gubkin Library of Science today is a major library of the petroleum sector. The Library has affiliates at the Evening Faculty in Orenburg and the College in Nefteyugansk.

The Library offers services to over 12 thousand customers and houses a collection accounting for more than 1 million volumes on petroleum industry topics, including rare publications and manuscripts of acknowledged scholars, dissertations and industry journals dating since 1920-1930s.

In 1989 a database for the IBM PC computerized catalogue was created. The Library collection has been input into INTERNET.

The Library works in cooperation with the libraries of petroleum universities and faculties, many of which used to be libraries of Gubkin evening faculties.

Gubkin Library of Science acts as a regional center for methodology in Moscow Oktyabrsky Area.

Collections

The Library collections include both home and a small amount of foreign publications, books of research, instruction and education in compliance with the tasks and the Regulations of Gubkin Academy.

Among the publications are: monographs, reference books, manuals, teaching aids, scientific works of petroleum institutes, conference and world petroleum congresses proceedings, all dissertation papers defended in the Academy's Academic Councils, periodicals etc… The Library annually subscribes to over 30 international journals; it also has fiction and science fiction collections.

CUSTOMER SERVICES

The Library of Science offers free service to Gubkin readership and charges outside customers minimum free. Over a million documents are borrowed every year.

The processes related to information services and literature processing is being gradually automated. All departments are equipped with PCs.

Information and bibliography services consist in retrospective retrieval of information from the computerized catalogue database with the following listing.

To improve customer service the library makes wide use of "NEFT i GAZ" Publishing House and the Academy's printing facilities.
