Seventeenth International Conference "Crimea 2010" "Libraries and Information Resources in the Modern World of Science, Culture, Education and Business" (before 2003 – "Libraries and Associations in the Transient World: New Technologies and New Forms of Cooperation") will take place in Sudak and a number of other cities (Koktebel, Novy Svet, Simferopol, Sovetskoye, Feodosia) on June 5-13, 2010 (professional program – June 7-11, 2010).
Topic of 2010: The Role of Libraries in Enhancing Information Culture and Preserving Cultural Heritage in the Current Social Development Context.
“Crimea 2010” – world professional forum for leadership and staff of libraries, publishing houses, book trade business, museums, archives, information centers, universities, colleges, computer and IT companies, for business, law, scientific, cultural and educational organizations.
The Conference is held under the auspices of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) – the main coordinating center of the world library community.

The first “Crimea” forum took place in Eupatoria in 1994. The second one was also held in Eupatoria – a resort in Crimean steppe, the third forum was held in a legendary city of Faros.
Since 1997 “Crimea” Conference has been held in Sudak – one of the most beautiful places on the Black Sea shore in the Crimea, the history of which dates back to the times of Ancient Greece. The main landmark of the city is a famous medieval Genoese Fortress.
The main events of the Conference professional program take place in "Sudak" Tourist and Health Center – one of the largest and most beautiful health resorts in Ukraine. It is situated near Sudak bay in a unique landscape garden which is a natural reserve. Total area of "Sudak" Tourist and Health Center is 27 hectares, including 17 hectares of park with over 100 species of plants (mainly rare ones, included into the “Red Book”). "Sudak" Tourist and Health Center offers over 20 comfortable buildings and conference centers, a large club with an exhibition hall, conference halls, and a modern business center, especially designed for hosting conferences.
Through the years “Crimea” Conference has become one of the largest and most important forums of the world library and information community, due to the topicality of its theme.
A lot of foreign colleagues consider the conference to be the best in the world because of its professional and friendly atmosphere, comfortable working conditions, and high level of its organization.
More than 16 thousand specialists from 47 countries took part in sixteen past “Crimea” Conferences, over 6.5 thousand papers were delivered. The following numbers will give you the idea of dynamics of the conference development: the first forum in 1994 – 230 participants from 15 countries, 100 papers; the tenth forum in 2003 – 1730 participants from 36 countries, 600 papers.
This year, we expect about 1300 participants from 34 countries.
At all “Crimea” Conferences much attention is paid to the state and development prospects of new information, computer and Internet technologies in library practice; law and business information; furthering cooperation between libraries, scientific, cultural, educational, and bookselling organizations, publishing houses, and book distributors.
Special emphasis will be made on the issues of open access and open information archives, system and network integration of information and library resources; the role of Internet in transforming library and information services; libraries’ assistance in reading promotion; the work of libraries in the context of toughening of copyright legislation, and, of course, on the role of libraries in increasing the level of information culture and preserving cultural heritage.
The Conference constantly focuses on the question of creating and functioning of e-libraries, corporate library and information systems; key problems of modern library and information science; ecological information; the work of school and children’s libraries; the role of libraries in maintaining modern information and educational technologies.
Special attention to the educational component is among the distinctive features of “Crimea” International Conference. Its program includes sections and seminars on topical problems of training and educational technologies, as well as practical trainings devoted to library processes automation, classification systems, and legal basis of information activities.
This year, the Conference program includes over 60 different events, among them:
- 14 permanent sections (they are held at each “Crimea” Conference), seminars, round tables, presentations of new publications and projects;
- “Aviation and Space” special subject program – “Space Pioneers” (moderators: Georgy Grechko, space pilot, Twice Hero of the Soviet Union, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics; Nataliya Koroleva, Professor, I.M. Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy, Member, K.E. Tsiolkovsky Academy of Cosmonautics);
- special event dedicated to poet Maximilian Voloshin “From Museum’s 25th Anniversary – to 100th Anniversary of Voloshin’s House”;

- “What? Where? When? In Library, Information, Book, and Publishing World” intellectual game.
Yakov Shrayberg, professor, will deliver the “Crimea” Conference annual paper – “The First Decade of the Information Century: the Effect of the Information and Digital Environment on the Role and Position of Libraries in the Developing Society”.
Over fifty leading libraries, companies and other organizations will participate in the traditional “Library Systems, Information and Publishing Products” exhibition, which is a part of the Conference program.

“Crimea” forum annually offers an extensive cultural program: musical evenings and evenings with famous writers, poets and artists, excursions to wild nature reserves and Crimean landmarks. Since 2005 sporting events have also been organized: football matches, tennis, billiards and chess tournaments, swimming contests.
This year, the cultural program includes evenings with actor, singer-songwriter, writer, People’s Artist of Russia Vladimir Kachan and with poet, TV anchorman, writer, prize-winner of “Wreath” and “Golden Feather of Russia” awards Vladimir Vishnevsky.
