On June 06 one-day tours will be organized for the Conference participants. You can choose one of the below tours and register on our web site to reserve a place in the bus.

It is necessary to confirm you participation in the tour on June 05 during registration for the Conference. Please note, that part of the tours will be organized on a paid basis. Be careful when choosing the tour!

Number of people who can take part in each tour is restricted. When an excursion group has been formed for a tour, registration for this tour will be closed.

 

TOURS “CRIMEA-2010” CONFERENCE

Tour 1 Kerch

Route: Sudak – Feodosia – Kerch – Feodosia – Sudak
Start: 7.00
Duration: 14 hours
Excursion Type: coach and walking tour (walking part of the tour is 3 km)

Places of Interest: Adzhimushkay quarry, Mitridat Mount, Kerch fortress, John the Forerunner’s Church, Tsar’s Barrow.

Tour to Kerch is one of the best for history lovers. You will go to Kerch peninsula, to the shore of the strait uniting two seas: the Black Sea and the Azov Sea. According to chronicles, the age of Kerch city is 26 centuries. The city had its ups and downs, it was destroyed and rebuilt many times. Ancient Greeks, Byzantines, Slaves, Khazars, Italians, and Turks lived there.

The tour program is extensive and interesting. At first you will admire a breathtaking view on the city and the strait from Mitridat Mount. On the mount there is a Glory obelisk dedicated to defenders and liberators of Kerch hero city and ruins of the ancient Panticapaeum town (6 c. BC).

You will also see John the Forerunner’s Church, one of the oldest functioning Christian churches in the Crimea, in the central square of the city.

Then you will visit Adzhimushkay Quarry. You will go on a 45-minute excursion there, and learn about the tragic fate of 13 thousand Soviet soldiers who were encircled by Nazi and had to shelter in the quarry and about several thousand native people who fought heroically with Nazi for 170 days during the Great Patriotic War.

Not far from Adzhimushkay Quarry there is a monument of ancient architecture of the 4th century BC – Tsar’s Barrow. You will have an opportunity to go inside and admire the skill of ancient masons.

You will also visit Kerch Fortress founded by Alexander II. In the 19th century it was one of the major strategic maritime fortresses in Russia. In the 20th century it was a prison, then a military warehouse and a place where Soviet regiments were quartered.

Note:

  • We recommend you to take photo camera, to put on comfortable footwear and to take warm clothes with you, as the temperature in Adzhimushkay Quarry is no more than 12° C. You may also need a flashlight in the quarry.
  • Women need headwear to visit the church.
  • You will visit only a part of Kerch Fortress because of safety reasons.

Tour 2 Crimean Reserve

Route: Sudak –Crimean Reserve – Yalta – Sudak

Admission fee to Crimean Reserve – 70 hryvnas

This is a brand new tour. Crimean Reserve is the oldest and one of the largest Ukrainian wild nature reserves. You will ride along “Romanov Road” – one of the most beautiful Crimean roads. The tour begins in Alushta and ends not far from Massandra. You will spend about 5 hours in the reserve. The road is serpentine, so the ride can be difficult, but there will be many stops.

First, you will see a trout fishery, then visit Sts. Cosmas and Damian monastery founded not far from Sts. Cosmas and Damian spring in 1856. You will be able to take some water from the spring with you, to visit the monastery chapel and church.

“Romanov Road” starts from the monastery and goes higher into the mountains. It is the most highland road in the Crimea. It was established in 1913 according to personal wish of the emperor Nicholas II. You will be able to admire breathtaking views, one of the most beautiful of which is that from “Winds Pavilion” (1426 metres above sea level). Along the way you may meet wild animals – red dear, European roe deer, etc.

The tour ends in Yalta, where you will have 1 hour of free time.

Note:

  • We do not recommend the tour to people with cardiovascular problems.
  • You will ride along serpentine road, so if you easily get travel sick, please take some medicine for sickness with you.
  • We recommend you to take photo camera, to put on comfortable footwear, to take containers for spring water and warm clothes, because the weather and temperature can change easily in the mountains.
  • Women need headwear to visit the monastery.
  • On the reserve territory you need to comply with certain regulations: it is forbidden to make noise, to litter, to pick plants, berries, and mushrooms.

Tour 3 Emine-Bair-Khosar Cave

Route: Sudak –Simferopol – Chatyrdag – Simferopol – Sudak

Admission fee to the cave – 60 hryvnas

The tour is recommended to all, except elderly people and children aged under 3 years.

Emine-Bair-Khosar is one of the five most beautiful caves in the world. It is a true underground museum that Nature has built for millions of years. Speleologists first visited it in 1927. They worked for many years and discovered 1500 underground halls and galleries. After that Emine-Bair-Khosar Cave became world-famous.

Emine-Bair-Khosar is situated in Chatyr-Dag mountain, where there are over 100 caves. Emine-Bair-Khosar is considered the most beautiful. You will see vast underground halls, stalactites, stalagmites, and underground lakes. You will also see an underground natural history museum where bones of pre-historic animals are shown.

The excursion in the cave lasts for 1h. 20 min. The length of the walk is no more than 700 metres. The cave is well-equipped: the paths are cemented, electric light is on.

You will have 1 hour of free time to have lunch.

Note:

  • We do not recommend the tour to people with claustrophobia.
  • We recommend you to take photo camera, to put on comfortable footwear and to take warm clothes, as it is always cold in the cave (+9+11°C).
  • You can rent warm coats in the cave: the price for adults is 2 hryvnas, for children – 1 hryvna.
  • Children aged under 5 years visit the cave for free, children aged 5-12 years have 50% discount.
  • To make photo and video-recordings in the cave you have to pay 10 hryvnas (photo) or 15 hryvnas (video).

Tour 4 Bakhchisaray

Route: Sudak –Simferopol –Bakhchisaray– Simferopol – Sudak

Admission fee to khan’s palace – 40 hryvnas

Admission fee to Chufut-Kale – 30 hryvnas

The tour program includes visits to khan’s palace, to medieval Assumption Cathedral and to Chufut-Kale cave town. From the 15th to the 18th century Bakhchisaray was the capital of the Crimean khanate. The word “Bakhchisaray” is translated as “palace-garden”.

The main attraction of Bakhchisaray is khan’s palace – one of the three most popular historical places in the Crimea. It is a true medieval feudal complex with pageant halls, khan’s rooms, harem, mosques, parks, and fountains. The most well-known fountain in Bakhchisaray is the “Fountain of Tears” built in 1764 in memory of khan’s wife, who died early in life. The famous Russian poet Alexander Pushkin devoted verses to the fountain.

The tour around the palace takes two hours. Afterwards, you will see wonderful Crimean “cave towns”. First you will visit Assumption Cave Orthodox Monastery which dates back to the 8th century. There is a saint spring near the monastery. Then you will mount a plateau and see the most famous Crimean “cave town” – Chufut-Kale, situated in hard-to-reach mountains. You will see basements of ancient houses, a part of the town wall, Janyke-Khanym Mausoleum, and houses left by their inhabitants in 1920-s.

The view from there on the old part of Bakhchisaray is amazing.

The excursion to Chufut-Kale lasts for 3 hours.

Note:

  • We recommend you to take photo camera and containers for spring water, and to put on comfortable footwear.
  • Women need headwear to visit the monastery.
  • Men naked from waist upward are not allowed to visit the khan’s palace.
  • Photo and video-recording in the palace is allowed on a paid basis.

Tour 5 Arpatsky Falls – Choban-Kule tower

Route: Sudak –Morskoye – Zelenogorye – Morskoye – Sudak

“Panagiya Gorge” ecological fee – 20 hryvnas

Picturesque Arpatsky Falls are situated not far from the ancient Zelenogorye settlement, known since medieval times. To get there, you will ride along serpentine mountain road.

Near Zelenogorye there is a wonderful mountain lake with water of unusual colour. You will be able to bathe there, as the water is clear and warm even at the beginning of summer. But the main attraction is a narrow mountain passage where women and children used to hide themselves in the times of war so that men could defend them easier.

Then you will walk along the river in the canyon and in the mountains (3 km). You will see capricious waterfalls, water basins, river bends, and admire beautiful views.

Afterwards you will go to see medieval Choban-Kule Tower situated not far from Morskoye settlement. The tower is supposed to have been a part of medieval Tasili fortress belonging to ferocious di Guasko brothers from Genoa.

Do not forget to take a photo or video camera with you, as the view from the tower is really wonderful.

Note:

  • We recommend the tour to people loving nature and history and experienced in walking tours. We do not recommend this tour to elderly people and little children.
  • It is necessary for you to put on comfortable nonslip footwear because of safety reasons.
